MOODBOARDS

Moodboard Moodboard

Above are the different images that I used for reference for the film. The original moodboard is quite different from the last. I originally intended for the film to be extremely colorful and saturated to illustrate the powerful and vibrant nature of love. This also allowed me to use colors to visually connect the film to the painting The Kiss of (1908) by Gustav Klimt, which inspired the name and story of the film. As I worked on the film, however, the way that the narrative was told evolved and the color palette began to change with it. At one point the film became black and white instead of the original kaleidoscope of colors and then subsequently I slowly introduced more specific hues back into the palette. I decided to make the film feel old and antiquated to match the idea that the characters were made of old, folded paper.

THE BUTTERFLIES

The butterflies in my film are all 3D geometry, and were originally going to be flat-shaded upon rendering (see the images below) to give a contrasting 2D element to the depth and dimension of the environment that the puppets exist in. In the end, however, I felt that even though they were orchestrating the dance between the puppets, I wanted them to blend together as a larger mass. Because of this, I stripped them of their color and texture and made them a translucent white. Butterfly Butterfly

STYLE FRAME EVOLUTION

Here is a progression of my style frames and the general look for my film, starting with basic blocked models to represent the puppets and butterflies all the way down to the final modeling and color.
